FIFA World Cup 2010 is now upon us. World Cup’s 19th tournament opens today in South Africa and marks the first time that the tournament will be hosted by an African nation and the forth time that the Japanese team has qualified. For anxious football fans in Japan looking to catch the tournament on TV at home or out with friends there are lots of choices in Tokyo.

On TV
Firstly, 44 of the total 64 games will be broadcast live on Japanese TV free of charge. The remaining 20 games will only be broadcast through Sky Perfect TV so you will need to be signed up for this service in order to watch.
For a full schedule of TV channels and times for all the matches throughout June & July (both free and by Sky Perfect subscription only) see the Sky Perfect World Cup Program Guide

Getting Out to See some Matches
It’s definitely a lot more fun to get out and watch matches with your friends and other fans. For those who prefer to get out mix it up there are no shortage of venues in Tokyo – most of which have prepared special menus and a full schedule of matches on big screen TV. Especially in central areas like Roppongi there are many popular pubs and restaurants which are a great place to cheer on you favorite team. A few or my favorites are Legends Sports Bar & Grill and the Hobgoblin in Roppongi . These 2 pubs are quite large and are located right next door to each other so this building will likely be packed with fans. If you are looking for an even larger party, and don’t mind paying a bit more for admission, you can catch Japan vs. Cameroon at the Liquidroom in Shinjuku, Japan vs The Netherlands at National Yoyogi Stadium in Yoyogi, and Japan vs Denmark at club Womb in Shibuya (see details below).

Japan vs. Cameroon
Monday June 14th, 9pm open, 11pm kick off
Location: Liquidroom Shinjuku
Admission: ¥2,000 (in advance), ¥3,000 (at the door);

Japan vs The Netherlands
Saturday June 19th, 6.30pm open, 8.30pm kick off
Location: National Yoyogi Stadium in Yoyogi
Admission: ¥2,500 (in advance), ¥3,000 (at the door)

Japan vs Denmark
Thursday June 24th, 11pm open, 3.30am kick off
Location: Womb in Shibuya
Admission: ¥2,300 (in advance), ¥2,500 (at the door)

Happy Birthday Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower, one of the iconic symbols of Tokyo, turned 50 years old on Tuesday December 23rd. Of course there is the obvious similarity to the Eiffel tower, but instead of being a monument to cast iron and steel, Tokyo Tower celebrates Tokyo’s post war boom. And in the process has somehow captured a special place in the hearts of the Japanese and tourists alike. Not soon after it was built in 1958, it claimed landmark status – popular for not only its great views of the city, but as a spot for couples seeking a little “romance”.

To celebrate the big day, the city threw a large event with a rock concert and a talk show at the plaza under the tower while some 20,000 visitors enjoyed the view from the observation deck above.

At night, over 100,000 bulbs made Tokyo Tower really shine. It was literally “lit up like a Christmas tree”.
